Why do we study English?

In my English 2 class, my teacher asked ,”Why do we study English?”

The first thing we are supposed to think about is why we study English from our own perspective. I think we study English so we can be correct when speaking and writing. We sound smarter and more intellectual when we are grammatically correct. English teaches us to write in a professional manner and it will help us later in the future.

The second thing we are supposed to think about is the school’s perspective on why we should study English. I believe the school wants us to study English so our school overall will become better and have a higher ranking among other schools. I also think the school requires us to study English so we have an easier time applying for jobs and college.

Lastly, we were asked why we should study English in society’s perspective. I think society says we should study English so we aren’t dumb. In today’s society, if we are dumb or not smart, we have a harder time and we are looked down on. If we don’t follow the “status quo” , which in this case is studying English, we are thought of as different or not doing it right. Society tells us to go to school and study English so we do, but the English that society wants us to study is never interesting or something we want to be studying, so we have a harder time focusing and keeping up with our work.

I believe that we should get more variety and choice when it comes to studying English. There is so much to learn about it, but we are only limited to what the schools and society give us.

Obsessions

Sally was just a normal teenage girl…. until she discovered the show criminal minds. She never thought of what she was going to do with her life, until she found criminal minds. She knew that was her passion, being in the FBI. That’s all she dreamed of from that moment on. She spent all of her time profiling and analyzing her family and friends. At first, her friends were all pretty impressed with her and how accurate her analyzing was. But after a while, it got to the point where Sally started to dig up secrets of her friends and family that weren’t supposed to be talked about. She was figuring out her friends biggest fears and regrets and constantly asking them questions about them to further her knowledge and research. Within a month or two, no one would talk to Sally because everyone was afraid of her and what she could figure out. Sally hadn’t even realized that she had lost most of her friends because she was always so absorbed in her work. She spent the rest of her life doing what she loved, but alone. Sometimes she wanted to share her findings with others but she would remember that she didn’t have any friends anymore because she was only focused on one thing. She started to analyze herself and profile her own behavior and she started to become depressed because she thought about all of the things she had done wrong in her life. She didn’t get to make memories and have fun, sometimes even her criminal tv shows with awful acting and a romantic plot weren’t enough to keep her happy. Eventually, she got a job where she could use her profiling skills to help others and along the way she met others just like her. Her coworkers were all just as invested in their work as she was with hers. She made friends and started to feel happy again. She knew she couldn’t go back and fix the past, but at least she could live her life in the moment.

TDEC

TDEC is a form of writing that keeps your thoughts organized and it makes it easier and faster for teachers to grade our work. The T in TDEC stands for thesis. A thesis is basically a way of answering the prompt/question in sentence form. It is the start of the essay or paper you are writing. The D stands for detail which is what is used to support your thesis and a detail is usually a real life example or quote that backs up the thesis. The E stands for elaboration. Elaboration is explaining the who, what, when, where, and why of the detail. Lastly, the C stands for commentary which is what the writers thoughts are about the detail or thesis. TDEC has been partially valuable to my writing. It is a good method and it helps express your thoughts clearly but it also is time consuming. Writing a TDEC takes time because you have to come up with every part. TDECs take away from the freedom of writing because every TDEC is set up the exact same way and they are always the same.

welcome

My first blog post:

Hello and welcome to my blog. My name is Ella Schmidt. I am a sophomore at Lake Travis High School and I am starting a blog for my English class. On this blog, I will talk about whatever is going in my life: friends, volleyball, and family. Whatever I feel is interesting, I will write about. This is my first blog so it will probably be a little rough, but getting better takes time and practice. This should be an interesting year, I hope you have a fun time learning about my life.
